1. Question:

Why is Warner Electric introducing a new generation of Packaged Modules to replace their current range of products Sized 50, 100 and 180?

Answer:

Over the years we have identified a variety of small incremental improvements that could be made to the module product offering.  Many of these improvement ideas came directly from our customers.

One of these changes involved a complete new housing for the units. Given that a change in appearance would occur, it was decided to implement as many improvements as possible so as to create the next generation of Packaged Modules now known as Gen2.

210 & 215 sizes will continue to be offered in the original design and will not be converted to the Gen2 design.

2. Question:

Is the Gen2 product range interchangeable with the current products available today?

Answer:

In terms of fit, form, and function, Gen2 is directly interchangeable. The only mechanical difference concerns the location of the optional Conduit Box. On the Gen2 model the box is positioned 90 degrees on center, compared to the original model which is positioned 60 degrees on center.

3. Question:

What’s new about Gen2?

Answer:

The Gen2 UniModules provide several improvements over the existing UniModule products. Alone these changes may seem minor; combined, they provide significant benefits to you, our customer.

Improvements include:

  • Changes to the housing fin design increases heat dissipation capacities, especially in the enclosed configuration of the UniModule.
  • Improved input to output axis design reduces vibration and improves noise and wear factors.
  • Use of custom designed mounting bolts allows for conduit box location directly on top of the unit.
  • Bolt hole patterns are re-positioned for ease of mounting.
  • Add-on enclosure cover kits allow for a unit to be upgraded to an enclosed unit in the field without replacing the clutch/brake. A cover plate bolts to both sides of the unit creating a completely enclosed brake package, which keeps contaminates out and wear particles in, for clean, quiet operation.

4. Question:

How is the Gen2 product priced in comparison to the existing product?

Answer:

The Gen2 product line is priced exactly the same as the existing product.

5. Question:

Will I be able to order a Gen2 product using the existing Model and Part Number?

Answer:

The Model and description for the Gen2 product is identical to that of the original units. However, new part numbers have been assigned to the Gen2 units. You can download a Part Number Interchange PDF document or use the Online Part Conversion tool.

6. Question:

How can I find out which Gen2 part number replaces my original design part number?

Answer:

You can download a Part Number Interchange PDF document or use the Online Part Conversion tool to identify the new Gen2 part numbers.

When viewing the new Gen2 catalog, you’ll note that selected models (50, 100, and 180 sizes) that have been converted to the new Gen2 design are highlighted in blue tint.

7. Question:

I know Warner is gradually phasing in the Gen2 product releases. Is there a way I can find out when my units will make the transition?

Answer:

Gen2 models will replace original units during a phased conversion schedule which is outlined on page 9 of the new Gen2 catalog.

8. Question:

Can my original EM 50-10 function with my Gen2 EM 50-20 unit?

Answer:

No. EM units are designed as two pieces to be customer assembled.  The changes to the housing alter some of the internal structure in ways that will not allow original generation EMs to be used together with Gen2 EMs.

9. Question:

How can I specify an EUM in Gen2?

Answer:

You can purchase an EUM unit by ordering a complete EUM part number (an already enclosed unit), or you can order both a UM unit and a separate cover kit accessory.

You can download a Part Number Interchange PDF document or use the Online Part Conversion tool to identify the new Gen2 part numbers.

10. Question:

I want to test a Gen2 unit before approving it for my application. How much longer will I be able to order the original design units?

Answer:

This will depend on the part number. Please contact your Altra Industrial Motion Area Sales Manager (ASM) to coordinate the transition to Gen2.

11. Question:

Are CAD drawings available for the Gen2 units?

Answer:

Yes, you can access Gen2 CAD drawings by logging into our Warner Electric eCatalog.  Gen2 part Spec pages contain drawings in 3 formats: .dwg (2D AutoCAD), .pdf (to view the AutoCAD drawing), and .igs (3D model).

12. Question:

I rebuild the modules I have in use now.  Will I still be able to do that even if the original design end assemblies are discontinued?

Answer:

Original components will be available for a period of time. We will advise customers before these are discontinued.  Please contact our Customer Service department at 800-825-6544 for details regarding your component and individual needs.

13. Question:

Can I rebuild Gen2 units?

Answer:

Yes, you can rebuild Gen2 units. Component parts are available for order.

14. Question:

When will exploded view drawings be available?

Answer:

The exploded view drawings are available upon request.  Please contact our Technical Support Department at 800-825-9050 to request your copy.

15. Question:

Can internal parts of the original design be used to rebuild Gen2?

Answer:

The original and Gen2 designs have some common parts. The armatures for each size will remain the same.  However, the rotors, hubs, and magnets are not identical.  Please reference the exploded view drawings that can be obtained by calling our Technical Support Department at 800-825-9050.

16. Question:

Why did size 210 and 215 models remain in the original design?

Answer:

50, 100 and 180 size units all use the same housing, so the changes made only affect these three sizes.

17. Question:

Can I request only Gen2 units even if the original design product is still available?

Answer:

Yes.  Since new part numbers have been assigned for Gen2, you would simply use the new Gen2 part number on your purchase orders rather than the original design part number.

18. Question:

Has the warranty changed for Gen2?

Answer:

No, the same Warner Electric warranty applies to the Gen2 product line.

19. Question:

I do not wish to change to the Gen2 design.  What should I do?

Answer:

Please work with your Altra Industrial Motion Area Sales Manager (ASM) to address your specific concerns.

20. Question:

Can the cover kit be used to make my UM a washdown-duty unit?

Answer:

No, while the cover kit will enclose the housing it is not designed as a watertight seal.

21. Question:

Can the cover kit be used with the original design unit?

Answer:

No, the housing design for Gen2 is designed specifically for this cover kit.  The original design housing simply does not have the same characteristics that would allow for the cover kit to be used.

22. Question:

We have a blanket order with Warner Electric.  How will the transition from the original design to Gen2 be handled?

Answer:

Please work with your Altra Industrial Motion Area Sales Manager (ASM) to coordinate the transition to Gen2. Your Altra ASM can work closely with manufacturing to best fit your particular situation.

23. Question:

Will Warner Electric repair an original design unit if it is returned while still under warranty?

Answer:

Warner Electric has the right to repair the original design unit or replace it with Gen2. Units returned under warranty in repair condition could be either repaired or replaced.

24. Question:

How do I visually distinguish an original design part from a Gen2 design part?

Answer:

Please reference the Design Features PDF document that outlines several changes that affect Gen2 unit appearance and performance.
